I have discussed certain points in handling difficult people in PART 1 of the article. I am continuing the discussions here. How difficult people hamper the work pace and place? They will keep wasting their valuable time. A team can waste a lot of man hours in this way. He might be influential to the colleagues in wasting time which poses a great danger to the very existing of the team. Team efficiency suffers a lot and it will drive you up the wall on most occasions. If you keep on avoiding such persons, you might end up in deep troubles. You will become responsible to answer to your higher official if anything goes down or the performance decreases. Setting Unclear Boundaries: You can set your own limits with your fellow staff. However, most frequently, a person might cross his boundary which might irritate you. They could possibly exhaust your energy and dampen enthusiasm. It will result in decrease in the performance level. Ultimately, this will destroy the company profits and other operations. The best possible solution to solve such issues is to understand the difficult people. Attempting to understand them will pay rich dividends. Proactive meetings and discussions will help you to regain the credibility and making those employees realize about their responsibilities. It is important to focus and forge the relationship and you need to take concrete steps for that. This will surely influence the persons who have been doing crap things earlier. As a HR manager, you power should lie in your willingness to change your self and have a better attitude while tackling such difficult persons. There are different types of people who could possibly create problems in all the ways. Some of them are: Persons who make unreasonable demands Persons who can absorb all the resources and still demanding more Persons who really do not bother about the targets, performance and stay unfocussed. Persons who do not wish to respect professional boundaries Persons who do not co-operate with others Persons who purposefully breaks the promises and continue to mislead the team Persons who constantly blame others for the out comings. Every difficult person will fit in to any of the above said category. If you can understand their nature, it will be easy to tackle with them. You need to be a problem solver in order to be an asset to the company. The best way to approach those guys is to separate the problem from the person. It is rightly said by Henry Cloud, “Go hard on the issue and soft on the person”. This holds true and every matter should be resolved in such a way. Make good relationships with employees. As an HR Manager, you can have direct conversations with them that will attempt to solve the problem. Monitor the person and give continuous feedback and offer him the space to develop his skills. Aim to get progressive discipline which is a formidable solution in the long run.
