Facebook turns five

Facebook turned Five this Wednesday with 150 million guests. Cheif Executive Mark Zuckerberg who co-founded the social netwrking website with two Harvard University roommates five years ago, marked the occasion in a low-key fashion with a blog post urging members to send a virtual gift to their online friends.

Despite its fame and standing of five years, Facebook still has to meet one challenge, - Make some Profits.Microsoft bought a 1.6% stake in Facebook in 2007 for $240 million, valuing the social network on paper at $15billion. But Facebook, unlike its peers like eBay, Amazon, etc, is yet to prove how it is going to translate traffic into cash.

But anyway, we can leave those details to behind-the-curtain members and simply wish Facebook a (belated) Happy Birthday!

Re: Facebook turns five

Personally, i got bored with orkut itself and stopped frequenting social networks. But out of curiosity, lets take a look, out of the 1500+ members here, we can see how many actually use it and their reason.

SO, here is the question- do you use social networks?
If yes, is it because-
(a) find it useful to stay in touch with friends
(b) meet new people
(c) for fun
(d) share stuff (pics, etc)
(e) Because it is "in"
(f) someone forced you to (lol)
(g) business networking

(feel free to state reasons other than this, as i said, i am not a frequenter of these networks, so can not provide a comprehensive list of choices)

Re: Facebook turns five

Facebook is one of my favs and orkut just blindly copies what facebooks does.

Now when it comes to making money facebook and any other social network is not the right thing because normally advertisers look for cost per click and having ads on any network where users are not ready to leave the network is hard to monetize.

This is not the case for Search Engines where people are on sites to go to other sites.

For many reason.

Quick.
Easy to Navigate
I find people easily
No one asks me if I know you and the main reason being I have huge address book asking like that sometimes looks strange.
