You have decided to crack the CAT? good luck , but it is always advisable to have a backup in any venture. In cases like this, where your future is at stake, why take the risk? So generally students appear in more than one of the admission tests. The prime advantage of doing this includes (a) the choice of having more options in terms of the number of institutes you can apply (b) more than one test means, one or the other will have a higher score, ensuring a better chance of joining an institute of your choice

Apart from CAT, the XAT (Xavier’s Aptitude Test) is a national level reputed test conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur for the past 50 years. The XAT scores are accepted by 60 institutes all over India including XLRI, XIM, XISS, LIBA, etc. To apply to these institutes you have to obtain their prospectus and register with the concerned institute.

The test is conducted for the duration of 2 hours and 20 minutes, with 2 hours for multiple choice questions covering English, Reasoning & Quantitative Ability and General Awareness and an essay question for the last 20 minutes. Preparation for CAT usually suffices for XAT, further most of the CAT coaching institutes offer specialized training for XAT.

So you would have already done your groundwork for XAT, all you have to do is register yourself, apply to your choice of institutes and take up the exam!

Some more information if you are interested in XAT:

Eligibility Criteria for XAT- A bachelors degree under 10+2+3 system recognized by a university or a deemed university is the eligibility criteria. Students with less than 50% in graduation are also eligible to apply for XAT. Also students, who will complete their graduation by 10th June, 2009 can apply for XAT.

This test is usually conducted in the first sunday of January and the interviews are conducted in the month of march. XAT 2009 will be conducted on 4th Jan, 2009 from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in 31 cities-Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Berhampur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Goa, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jamshedpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Noida, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Rourkela, Trivandrum, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam. In metros and large cities there will be multiple test centers.

XAT Bulletin & XLRI Prospectus can be obtained from 121 Branches of Axis Bank or from the XAT Office, XLRI, Circuit House Area (East), Jamshedpur, 831035 for a fee of Rs.800/-. Once you obtain this, proceed to www.xlri.edu and as per the instructions fill up the details. After downloading the XAT PP form and mailing it, you can download the admit card between 18th December, 2008 to 1st January, 2009. Registration for XAT 2009 is between 01-Sep-2008 and 30th Nov 2008.
