Posted 09-01-2009 at 02:40 PM by priyad

The Present GMAT Exam

The GMAT was created in the year 1953 by 9 B-Schools to evaluate and admit the best of students to their institutes. It is till date accepted as the a very reliable indicator and testing method and has institutes across the world accept GMAT scores. For example, in the year 2008 alone more than 2,50,000 candidates took up the test in more than 90 countries. This clearly reflects the success and effectiveness of the test. To be as effective as it is, continuous reviwing and revising of the exam is done. Each potential new question is pilot-tested with candidates who represent the diver GMAT test taking group by an international panel and efforts are taken to ensure that the questions are culturally bias-free.

The Next Generation GMAT

(i) Advancements in Technology and measurement make a significant impact on assessments
(ii) More specialized master's program and more variations in the traditional MBA are available
(iii) Change in graduate management education due to chande in business marketplace

Considering the above factors, GMAC has decided to take an innovative approach towards GMAT exam. The Next Generation GMAT which will be completed in 2013, will be based on the current exam, however it will utilize the advances in testing technology and science more to provide more accurate measures of skills. I will also offer measures of new skills applicable to both traditional MBA and new business programmes.

GMAC is developing this in a rigorous and detailed manner to ensure that the Next Generation GMAT will provide the most accurate information possible to the B-Schools so they can admit the best of students to their programs.

Three-Phase Process in developing the Next Gen GMAT:
  • Skills research- GMAC is currently identifying and reviewing potential new skills that the GMAT could measure
  • Pilot-testing- Utilizing the first phase research, designing and pilot-testing enhancements to meet the needs of business schools will be done in this phase
  • Operational readiness- GMAC will ensure that it is easily accessible to all test takers and that test centres are upgraded as needed. New test-preparation materials will be developed and made available to candidates before the first new tests are delivered.

In every phace, feedback will be solicited by GMAC from key school professionals (faculty, admissions officers, directors, etc)

How will it be?

Will the NExt Gen GMAT be more tough? More or Less questions?WHat new skills will be tested? Well- we will get the answers in 2013 only. However, one can only marvel at the levels of commitment of GMAC in continuously enhancing and increasing effectiveness of GMAT exam, making it the most reliable and widely accepted testing method across the world.
