General Guide to an MBA program - Part I

Posted 08-04-2009 at 06:52 PM by priyad

Today we see B-Schools cropping up throughout the country and the number of MBA aspirants is on an ever-increasing graph. Among them a sizable portion of aspirants make any or more of these mistakes- choose an MBA or equivalent diploma as it appears to be the order of the day, select the wrong stream/specialization or the wrong institute.

A post graduate education in management is a heavy investment in terms of time, money and effort. To earn a good return on investment and reap the benefits it is necessary to avoid the above mentioned mistakes. A thorough understanding of what the program- what it offers and how to choose a suitable B-School therefore becomes a pre-requisite.

A management education should be viewed essentially a skill cum knowledge sharpening and enhancement program. Opportunities to practice and apply the theory and concepts learnt in the classroom provided by most of the B-Schools through internships and projects give the students a good experience and exposure to face the corporate world.

Traditionally an MBA course would be for a duration of 2 years. Today, the course itself has adapted to the needs of the aspirants.

Full-time course (1 or 2 years)
Executive MBA ( E-MBA) and Part-time course (of varying duration)
Online MBA program
Program through distance education

Usually full-time courses are applicable to those who can take time off from work and invest 2 or 1 year for education. But not all can avail such a luxury. Hence the evolution of part-time courses. Studying while working works good for many! The advancement of technology has been exploited by many industries and the education industry is no exception. Online MBA programs are best suited for those who can not take time out to travel and reach classes and prefer attending classes and studying from the convenience of their desk. Further more executives choose this E MBA program as it gives them flexi-timing which is most essential for them to balance education and work.

So keep all these factors in mind before choosing the program. Make sure it suits your budget, timing and most importantly it must be a good investment.

Is it useful doing MBA program thru Universities/Institutes providing Distance Education, e.g., SMU, Symbosis etc. when attending Part-time and fulltime program is feasible possible for someone. The centers of universities like SMU also provide classes on regular basis, does industry treat them as part-time program?

Hi C.Trilok. If you have the time, resources and inclination for a full-time program, then you should choose it. Usually employers prefer it.
