The Indian Story…
A special committee- AICTE, was set up in the 1950s by the Indian government to study the prospect of commencing management as an academic discipline in a post-graduate level. As per the committee’s recommendation part-time pg diploma courses in business administration was commenced in selected citites. Also suggested by the committee was to form an authoritated body to manage and develop this stream of education. As a result a Board was set up which chose Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore and Madeas to set up Institues.
However, it was only in 1960s that the government formed 2 autonomous institutes (not within the university system) namely- Indian Institute of Management- at Calcutta and Ahmadabad which offered 2 year full-time MBA courses (post-graduate diplomas). Later it was launched in Banglore, Kozhikode, Indore and Lucknow and Shillong .
