MBA Preparation: Increase your English Vocabulary

Posted 01-15-2010 at 12:27 PM by himanshusofttech

If your mother language is not English you must be strongly skilled in English language. In the MBA admission test or GMAT, it is the most difficult part for non-native English speaker. To build up your English skill, you have to have clear idea about all grammatical terms, different structures of sentence construction, tense, and most important thing is the vocabulary. You must know your whole exam script will be in English and also there are huge portion of marks allocated in English section individually. So to build up your English skill, you should increase the volume of your English dictionary in your brain.

We all know, it is hardly possible for anybody to memorize the dictionary, or spending too much time to memorize the words. So you have to follow some rules to get rid of conventional boring ways and make your dictionary stable and permanent. Here are some rules which are not the best, but would be helpful in building your English vocabulary.

First of all, we all know practice makes a man perfect, so read, read, and read! When you read anything you have to deal with many new words. Try to remember the uses of the words that you read. To do so, find the simplest meaning in English and not in your native language. Before finding the meaning try to assume the meaning in your own words. And always emphasize on the usage of the word. This way it will be more helpful when you will increase the habit of reading more English articles, journals, newspapers, novels and books.

Secondly, try to participate in vocabulary quizzes and games. You will find lots of vocabulary quizzes and games in your admission material, internet and there is also software available to build your vocabulary. It is also interesting.

Hearing is more stable than only seeing things. So thirdly, listen English news; watch English movies with subtitles. These will also help you to learn English. And this could be more permanent than other methods.

If possible try to memorize at least 10-20 words with synonyms every day. Use the flash card method to memorize the words. You will find these flash cards in SAT books. What you have memorized in day, try to use those words while talking, writing and thinking to make your learning stable. Also you are learning the usage of the words by this way.

Then you can adopt mnemonics or, memory tricks. For example, consider the word ‘EGREGIOUS’ (extremely bad). Now think“EGG REACH US”,then assume that you have made a mistake so bad that they are throwing eggs at us and a rotten egg reaches us. Such funny little word pictures will help you remember what the words means, try to find the best way what suits you best.

Increase the habit writing articles or diaries in English, which will help you to cultivate your writing skills too. And from writing you can also be able to learn where and how to use a word which is the most important things.

Lastly, try to speak in English as much as you can. This is the best way to learn vocabulary practically... When speaking, make a list of unknown word in your pocket diary, and then find out the English of those words. Try to use these methods and choose which ones suits you best.
