Cat 2009 being approximately 3 months away, the tension has reached its heights. The preparation should be almost covering the basics by now. The Verbal Ability section of the CAT paper evokes considerable amount of fear in the minds of a large number of aspirants while many find it to be their favorite section. There is a number of advantages about Verbal Ability that happens to be of great help while acing CAT.
How to do it
Questions in VA take the least amount of time to be answered. Thus if answered correctly they save a lot of time along with giving you an edge and some quick handy marks. The trouble that happens is that the chances of making errors are very high. You can never be 100 percent sure about the correct answer as all the options happen to be very close to each other. The section can be classified broadly into three section Vocabulary-based, Language-based, and Verbal Reasoning –based.
The vocabulary based questions happen to include synonyms, antonyms, phrases, words used inappropriately and matching the following. The aim should be to answer three or more questions in a span of a single minute.
The language based questions includes grammar, sentence completion, fill in the banks, etc. The maximum chances of making mistakes are with this section. The target though should be to answer one question in 30 to 60 seconds time.
For Verbal Reasoning-based questions including a paragraph based questions along with logical reasoning based ones. These questions are mainly the test of your logic. The stronger your logic is the more comfortable you would feel in this part. The time assigned again should be ranging from 60-9o seconds for every question.
It is extremely important to note a few things. Like any other area in the Cat paper in the section of Verbal Ability too, there are questions that are easy and there are questions that are relatively tough along with ones that are genuinely difficult. It is a mixed bag. The key like any other area of the paper is to try and figure out questions that are easy instead of getting trapped in the tough ones and spending more time and even increasing the chances of making mistakes than ever. It may happen that you might come across questions the answers to which are not known and the other question might seem even more difficult and completely unanswerable, then you can eliminate options. You can do it by eliminating those which according to you may seem completely inappropriate as one and thus try and get to the correct option by looking at the remaining ones. In this case you may have to take a guess, a calculated one though.
Tackling Tactics
Tackling questions in the serial order won’t be a good idea on the day of the examination. CAT going computer based you might have some problems in taking a complete view of the questions but still it is very much possible. Here are the few tips

- Getting stuck anywhere is calling for trouble, just keep moving.
- A close call between two options can be solved by guessing but more than two should be well left.
- Reasoning related question calls for great logical sense, if you are not sure you must leave that particular question.
- Use answer choice elimination to select the answer.
