Mastering Quantitative Ability Section

Posted 08-21-2009 at 05:54 PM by Aspen

There is always something very ghastly about the Quantitative Ability section of the Common Admission Test that creates extreme reactions in the mind of an aspirant. People can hate it or love it but they certainly can’t ignore it. CAT, being just a little over three months away, its high time you should ensure that you are ready for the big day with the quant section along with the rest. For people who are tad bit scared of the quant ghost, the following tips may be of some help in fighting the demon.

Evaluation of status

Evaluating your own status regarding the matter must always be the step to begin with. Being unable to clear the quant cutoffs in simulated tests taken, going completely blank at the sight of quant questions or lacking in confidence can be considered as matters of genuine concern. If you happen to be one among two lakh people gearing up for CAT with the above mind set, you need to work on certain areas to overcome these difficulties.

What should you do?

Here is the million dollar question. What should you do in order to tackle these above stated problems. The following might be the answers.

You should under no circumstance let your past failures haunt you all the way to the day of CAT. It is always in the mind that a person accepts defeat before he actually succumbs to the opponent in a battle. Keeping the mental strength alive, you should make sure that a past few failures must not adversely affect your performance on “D DAY”. Your eyes must always be trained on the war even if you lose a few battles.

Secondly paying attention to individual topics can be of a world of help to you. Singling out topics that you are comfortable from those you are not should be the key for making things easy. Topics like Numbers, Algebra, and Geometry are those topics that make a chunk of the quant section and they deserve due respect .Thus the moral of the story is “to divide and rule”. Divide the entire section into topics, and after that those topics into sub topics and make it a topic-centric preparation.

Once classifying the quant section into topics you must allocate time wisely for its preparation. Instead of leaping straight into the problems that are difficult efforts must be made to analyze the mathematical concepts, however trivial they may seem.

The examples should be solved without taking a glance at the solutions. After you reach the solution, compare it with the approach in the example. After this, the theory along with the formulae should be looked at again and then the exercises must be attempted.

Thirdly, it is really necessary to take simulated tests in alike environments as that of the original examination. Such tests are very often conducted by a number of training institutes all over India. In addition to it certain timed tests of 30 minutes time duration without interruptions must be taken at least twice a week .After finishing the tests they must be evaluated for another 45 minutes approximately. You must try to analyze how each problem was solved during the tests and try to adapt better and simpler ways of solving problems.

The following step must include the identification of the problems that attracts the attention at first glance while taking the test. You should analyze how long and accurate the answers to such questions are. Once you do that you must start working on these topics as well to improve your concepts.

Preparatory agenda

You should try to cover as many topics as possible. Topics such as Numbers and certain others should not be left as they are usually form quiet a number. Following the above steps would help you in mastering the Quantitative Ability section in more ways than one.
